Artist's Comments

Joga, meaning "play" in Portugese. When you're in the center of the "roda" (circle) in capoeira, you play.

This is my confused attempt at fusing capoeira, hip-hop culture, Manila, and Sydney. I'm pretty sure capoeira purists will want to burn me at the stake after seeing this. But I just wanted to let my mind out to play :-) And I haven't had this much fun making anything in ages!

I wanted to take capoeira our of the classroom and white-uniform setting, and draw a bunch of kids getting together in an alleyway to play, outside of class hours.

All the people here are combinations of people I've actually known or met. You might be able to tell who some of them are.

Who can tell who the shy, demure figure is on the very right? ;-)

The grafiti in the back are complete artworks in themselves, but they play a supporting role here as part of the backdrop (notice my Manila love tribute).

And the background is a photo I took in Escolta, Manila 2 years ago.
