Artist's Comments

I made this about a year ago and only posted it now. I don 't know why I made it so damn small :-p Maybe I'll redo it bigger.

I took the photo on the streets of Escolta, Manila. It used to be the center of wealth and society back at the turn of the 1800s. The majestic, old art-deco buildings still stand tall, but abandoned, scarred with graffiti, and slowly crumbling into decay. Homeless folk have occupied the buildings with their families. Their laundry hangs on the window sill, while the street below is strewn with junk and garbage. Naked children roam the streets, eating food they find on the ground. The smell of urine and feces occasionally pervades the air.

I saw this woman and her baby and I thought she exuded a certain saintly quality amidst the squalor. Manipulated the lighting and the colors.

Here are other deviations I made from photos taken in the same area.

Heart-breaking. :-(

A well-captured piece.

The figure of the woman is a bit-bit-bit edgy. I don't know if it's just the luster from the background that gave this effect, but was the mother-and-child figure cut and pasted here?

Anyhow, the expression on both the mother's and the baby's face is, as the comment above, "Heart-breaking".

I like.

very nice. but yeah she looks pasted-on, since her background's too dark, or she's too well lit. hehehe :D great shot though!
